A grand historic San Francisco hotel with over 1,000 rooms, the St. Francis on Union Square completed a $65 million restoration in 1999. The hotel is well known for their long held tradition of cleaning their money. Over 60 years ago, hotelier Dan London noticed that women's white gloves were blackened as they handled dirty coins given as change. To overcome this terrible problem, London had his staff clean all the money. Now the hotel gives clean St. Francis money and crisp new dollar bills as change to every guest. The St. Francis Hotel has a total of 1,194 hotel rooms including 84 suites. In the main building built between 1904 and 1913, the hotel has 613 rooms on 10 floors. In the hotel's Tower Building built in 1972, there are 581 rooms on 27 floors.

The main building has 50 suites including four elegant luxury suites (State, Chairman, London, and MacArthur) which were at one time San Francisco residences of former permanent guests. Each of the specialty suites offer a semi-private entrance via the Post Street elevator.

The Tower Building has 34 executive suites including six luxury specialty suites located on the 31st Floor, featuring the Windsor Suite (the 1983 home to Queen Elizabeth II, renovated in June 1996).
